The Basic Skills Program teaches academic and fundamental skills necessary for tomorrow’s job problem solving, negotiating, organizing, creative thinking, listening, and leadership. Students enroll in either day or evening classes throughout the semester at various locations. Traditionally, classes are small with students studying at their own pace. There are no grades, completion time requirements or cost for registration, books or materials.

  • ABE Adult Basic Education – designed for those individuals who would like to improve basic skills in reading, math, and language.
  • GED General Educational Development – designed to help students prepare for the G.E.D. test, the nationally recognized certification of high school equivalency
  • Adult High School Diploma Program (AHS) - Haywood Community College, in cooperation with Haywood County Public Schools, offers an alternative to GED completion that leads to a high school diploma. Students can earn a diploma by submitting an official transcript with at least 10 credits from previous schools, passing the N.C. Competency Test, and completing the requisite number of core courses-28 total credits for 16 and 17 year olds, and 20 credits for students who are 18 years and older. Morning and evening classes are offered Monday through Friday for 20 hours per week at the Job Link Annex in Hazelwood. Interested applicants should call to schedule an orientation and interview prior to registration. Our Adult High School diploma is fully accepted by colleges, universities, and employers.
  • English-As-a-Second Language (ESL) -The English-As-a-Second Language Program offers on-going classes for all levels in several locations throughout Haywood County. These classes are designed for our international students who want to improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills in English. ESL topics in class include academic and business English, TOEFL preparation, life skills, pronunciation, rights and responsibilities of citizenship, U.S. History and Government, and computer skills. Morning and evening classes are offered free of charge, and texts and materials are provided.

NOTE: Several class locations and meeting times are offered to accommodate adults who have family and work responsibilities. Our classes run year-round with open enrollment. Students are at different levels ranging from beginning reading to GED preparation. We welcome anyone who wants to brush up on basic math, reading, or computer skills. Students work at their own pace with the assistance of the class instructor. All classes and materials are free.
