Adv. College Track

The main goal of the ACT (Advanced College Track) program is to guide high school students on a successful path to pursue and complete a college degree. This program familiarizes students with the college environment while giving them more educational and career opportunities. The primary focus of this program is to give high school students a taste of college life while helping them improve their chances for success in college. Students will learn leadership skills, how to better manage their time, communication skills, problem solving techniques and the importance of community service. One of the program's main benefits is the strengthened relationship between Haywood County High Schools and Haywood Community College. For students enrolled in ACT the transition from the public schools to HCC is definitely smoother. The intent of the ACT program at Haywood Community College is to complement and not compete with area high school classes. Special planning and coordination between HCC and area high schools insure that courses offered at HCC do not duplicate those offered in the high schools. The ACT program at HCC provides an opportunity for high school students to complete a portion of their college freshman year before they enroll in a college program. In some fields up to 24 semester hours can be earned while in high school while completing a career pathway to meet high school graduation requirements (for example, the Criminal Justice Career Pathway available at Tuscola High School). Through ACT the college offers three programs for students currently enrolled in high school–Dual enrollment, Concurrent Enrollment (formerly Huskins Bill), and College Tech Prep.

Costs

Free tuition to qualifying high school students is available through ACT, a program developed by Haywood Community College. Concurrent and College Tech Prep students also receive required textbooks free of cost. However, dual enrollment students must purchase required textbooks.

Objectives

The objectives of the ACT program are as follows:

  • To provide college credit courses to high school students so that they may complete some program requirements prior to enrollment at the community college;
  • To strengthen motivation and a sense of achievement of Haywood County high school students;
  • To encourage among Haywood County high school students the utilization of post secondary opportunities as a means of pursuing lifelong educational goals; and
  • To expand opportunities among Haywood County high school students by offering college credit courses.

Student Eligibility

Under the ACT program, students may enroll as a Dual Enrollment, Concurrent, or College Tech Prep student. Qualifications are listed below.

 

Dual Enrollment

  • Must be 16 years of age or older and be satisfactorily progressing toward graduation from high school;
  • Be enrolled in at three courses at his/her high school or enrolled in an equivalent of one-half of the school day;
  • Complete and submit the permission form with his or her high school principal, and the president of HCC prior to registration and submit a completed application for admission; and
  • If student is home schooled, a copy of the approval letter or card from the NC Department of Non-Public Instruction must be submitted with dual form.
    • Concurrent Enrollment (formerly Huskins Bill)
  • Must be enrolled in grades 9-12 and have achieved a level of academic and social maturity necessary to perform successfully in college credit courses; and
  • Must be recommended by high school principal, complete and submit an application for admissions, and complete registration form.
    • College Tech Prep
  • Must receive a score of 80 or higher on the VOCATS and receive a grade of "B" or better in each high school class; and
  • To receive college credit for designated high school courses, a student must enroll at the community college within two years of high school graduation.
