College Virus Prevention Plan
Haywood Community College has measures in place to recognize and respond to reports of the H1N1 flu and or other potential Pandemic event(s). If confirmed cases of novel influenza A (H1N1) virus infection or a large number of cases of influenza like illness (ILI) (i.e. fever with either cough or sore throat) occur among students, faculty, or staff or in the community, College officials will consult with state and local health officials regarding an appropriate response.
PREVENTION STRATEGIES to decrease the spread of flu:
- Routinely inform faculty and staff on H1N1 and other types of flu
- Provide information on how the flu spreads
- Describe protection/prevention strategies such as hand washing, covering mouth/nose, etc; Everyone on campus should practice good respiratory etiquette (cover cough with tissue and discard tissue in trash) and hand hygiene (frequent hand washing with soap and water r use of alcohol-based gels).
- Install antiviral hand sanitizers in high traffic areas;
- Distribute safe practices posters on campus
- Ask individuals not to attend work while sick with H1N1 and other types of flu; not attend classes and limit interactions with others for a period of at least 24 hours after their fever resolves without the use of fever reducing medications (e.g., acetaminophen or ibuprofen).
MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES for dealing with the flu:
- Provide training for faculty and staff regarding the types, symptoms, methods of prevention, reporting, etc
- Use of established communication channels for reporting and responding to occurrences of the flu
