Health & Emergency Services
Emergency Services Training at HCC encompasses many disciplines. This includes Emergency Medical Services Certifications from Medical Responder through Paramedic level, and upgrade courses. Health education courses are designed to assist those desiring employment or retrain in in related fields.
Haywood Community College offers certification and upgrade courses for rescue and emergency services personnel. The following specialized training programs are some of the courses currently being offered or can be developed for a requesting agency.
Courses for Health and Emergency Services
First Responder: FIP-4715
This 60 hour course allows fire department personnel to be qualified as a First Responder. This course is approved by the local county medical director. Tuition is waived for North Carolina fire, rescue, law and EMS personnel. A Registration Fee of $60.00 is charged for all others. Approximate cost of book is $65.00-CPR card is $2.00.
Medical Responder: EMS-3025
This 66 hour course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. This course is designed to provide knowledge and skills in immediate emergency care. This training is geared toward fire department, industrial and other personnel who might arrive on scene before EMS. This course is based on Department of Transportation standards and must be approved by the NC Office of EMS. The lead instructor for the MR educational program must be a NC Credentialed Level I EMS Instructor. After successful completion of course, students will be allowed to register for the NC OEMS Certification Examination for Medical Responder. Tuition is waived for North Carolina fire, rescue, law and EMS personnel. Registration Fee for all others will be $60.00. Approximate cost of book is $75.00-CPR card is $2.00.
Student Prerequisites: Successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading at a minimum 10th grade level.
Emergency Medical Technician Basic: EMS-3044
This 203 hour course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. This course includes classroom and skills development to introduce basic emergency medical care. Topics include preparatory, airway, patient assessment, medical emergencies, splinting and shock management, trauma and CPR. This course is based on Department of Transportation standards and must be approved by the NC Office of EMS. After successful completion of course, students will be allowed to register for the NC OEMS Certification Examination for Emergency Medical Technician. Tuition is waived for North Carolina fire, rescue, law and EMS personnel. Registration Fee for all others will be $65.00 (payable twice, due to length of course there will be a second registration). Approximate cost of book is $85.00-CPR card is $2.00.

Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate: EMS-3045
The EMT-I course is approximately 280 hours and must meet the standards of the Department of Transportation and the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services. The course includes classroom and practical skills instruction, as well as clinical practice. Topics include basic pharmacology, intravenous therapy, venipuncture, acid-base balance, and fluids and electrolytes. The clinical portion includes both in-hospital and ambulance sessions. The lead instructor for the EMTIntermediate must be a NC Credentialed Level II EMS instructor. Upon successful completion, students will be allowed to register for the North Carolina OEMS certification examination for EMTI. Tuition is waived for North Carolina fire, rescue, law and EMS personnel. Registration Fee for all others will be $65.00 (payable twice, due to length of course there will be a second registration). Students will be required to purchase malpractice insurance ($44.00) to participate in the hospital and clinical instruction. Approximate cost of book is $85.00.
Student Prerequisites: Successful completion of an EMT-Basic course; high school diploma or GED; successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension and English skills at a minimum post-secondary grade level; demonstration of math skills at a minimum high school grade level. Students must hold a current American Heart CPR card for Healthcare Provider.
Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic: EMS-3031
The Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic is approximately over 1300 hours of classroom, hospital and field hours. This course is based on the Department of Transportation standards and must be approved by the NC Office of EMS. The lead instructor for this advanced level training must be a Credentialed Level II EMS Instructor. After successful completion of course, students will be allowed to register for the NC OEMS Certification Examination for Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic. Tuition is waived for North Carolina fire, rescue, law and EMS personnel. Registration Fee for all others will be $65.00 (payable every 16 weeks until completion of course). Students will also be required to purchase malpractice insurance of $44.00 to participate in the hospital and field instruction. Approximate cost of book is $150.00
Student Prerequisites: Successful completion of an EMTIntermediate course, high school diploma or GED; successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension and English skills at a minimum post secondary grade level; demonstration of math skills at a minimum high school grade level; pre or co-requisite course of EMS 3000 Anatomy and Physiology. Students must hold a current American Heart CPR card for Healthcare Provider.
International Trauma Life Support: EMS-3041
Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support: Haywood Community College offers classes in Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) and International Trauma Life Support (ITLS). These are based upon National Standard trauma care objectives and certified through national agencies. The Registration Fee is $55.00 plus National Certification Card Fee. A textbook is required which costs approximately $40.00. Tuition is waived for North Carolina fire, rescue, law and EMS personnel.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support: EMS-3048
This course is designed to educate emergency medical personnel, nurses and physicians in Advanced Cardiac Life Support through the American Heart Association. This course teaches the proper evaluation and advanced treatment skills for the cardiac patient. The Registration Fee is $50.00 for the course. The ACLS provider card is $3.50. A textbook is required. Tuition is waived for North Carolina fire, rescue, law and EMS personnel.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support: EMS-3046
This American Heart Association course is designed to prepare emergency medical personnel, nurses and physicians to recognize and treat infants and children experiencing lifethreatening medical emergencies. Emphasis is placed on recognition of signs and symptoms as well as invasive skills needed to stabilize the condition of patient. The Registration Fee is $50.00 and the PALS provider card is $3.50. A textbook is required. Tuition is waived for North Carolina fire, rescue, law and EMS personnel.
Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers: EMS-3106
The Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers is a 14-16 hour course which presents the scope of knowledge in pediatrics that defines paramedic prehospital pediatric practice. Topics include guidelines, self-assessment cases, airway management in children and core pediatric procedures. The Registration Fee is $55.00 plus cost of PEPP card. A textbook is required. Tuition is waived for North Carolina fire, rescue, law and EMS personnel.
CPR-Healthcare Provider-American Heart Association
This course is designed by the American Heart Association for health care professionals, emergency personnel, and other persons interested in learning adult, child and infant techniques for pulmonary resuscitation, cardiac resuscitation, and foreign body airway obstruction for conscious and unconscious victims. The Registration Fee is $50.00; cost of book is approximately $15.00 and CPR card is $2.00. Tuition is waived for North Carolina fire, rescue, law and EMS personnel.
CPR and First Aid-American Heart Association
This course instructs CPR, patient assessment, medical and environmental emergencies, triage and blood borne pathogens in order for students to attain certification in First Aid and CPR. The Registration Fee is $55.00, cost of book is approximately $15.00 and CPR card is $2.00
Health Related Courses
Nurse Aide I: NUR-3240
This 192 hour course prepares students to provide care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Emphasis is on the role of the Nurse Aide with healthcare team members; communication and documentation; infection control; principles of safety and emergency measures; resident’s rights; common disorders/diseases of each body system; systemrelated aging changes; personal care and grooming; perform accurate measurement procedures; elimination procedures; special care procedures; nutrition management; death and dying; restorative services, and psychological effects of aging. This course consists of classroom, lab and clinical hours. Upon successful completion of the course, the student is eligible to make application for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program. Students passing the assessment test will then be listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry. The Registration Fee is $65.00; $16.00 for malpractice insurance; $1.30 for student accident policy; $2.00 for AHA CPR card; $86.00 approximate cost of book and $92.00 state testing fee paid to testing agency.
Students must provide a current copy of their driver’s license and a copy of their Social Security card on the first day of class. The name of these two identifications must match.
Student Prerequisites: Students must complete a reading comprehension test with a 9th grade reading level; provide a negative TB skin test within last six months and a copy of their MMR immunization record.
Nurse Aide II: NUR-3241
The Nurse Aide Level II course prepares graduates to perform more complex skills for patients or residents regardless of the setting. A skill/competency evaluation is required for documenting student competency. The course includes classroom, laboratory and clinical learning experiences. Upon satisfactory completion of this 160 hour course and skill/ competency evaluation, the graduate is eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide II by the North Carolina Board of Nurse Aide Registry.
The Registration Fee is $65.00; malpractice insurance is $16.00; student accident policy is $1.30; CPR card is $2.00; $75.00 approximate cost of book and state registry fee.
Student Prerequisites: Persons enrolling must have a high school diploma or GED; current Nurse Aide I certification with letter of reference; proof of at least 75 hours of NA I training; three months experience as a Nurse Aide I; copy of a negative TB skin test within the last 6 months, a copy of their MMR, Hepatitis B vaccination or denial waiver form, proof of tetanus vaccine within the past 10 years and proof of chicken pox or vaccination.
Medication Aide: PHM-4100
This 24 hour course is designed to meet the training requirements for becoming qualified to be a Medication Aide. The course will cover the six rights of medication administration for non-licensed personnel. Topics will include medication administration via the oral, topical and instillation routes, medical asepsis, and hygiene, terminology, and legal implications. Upon completion, students should be able to take the competency exam and demonstrate skills necessary to qualify for listing on the North Carolina Medication Aide Registry. The Registration Fee is $55.00; cost of book is approximately $10.00 and $50.00 state testing fee.
Student Prerequisites: Students enrolling must have a high school diploma or GED; currently listed on the Division of Facility Services Listing as a Nurse Aide I and have a current AHA CPR card.
Phlebotomy: MLA-3022
Phlebotomy training prepares the student to draw blood specimens from patients for the purpose of testing analyzing blood. A phlebotomist’s job includes maintenance of equipment used in obtaining blood specimen; the use of appropriate communication skills when working with patients; the selection of venipuncture sites; the care of blood specimen; and the entry of the testing process into the computer, as well as clerical duties associated with record keeping of the blood tests. This 207 hour course consists of theory and clinical experiences in performing blood collections. After successful completion of the course, students can register to take the ASCP Board of Registry Exam. The Registration Fee is $65.00; malpractice insurance is $16.00; student accident policy is $1.30; CPR card is $2.00; $60.00 approximate cost of book and national exam fee is optional.
Student Prerequisites: Students enrolling must have a high school diploma or GED. Students must provide a copy of a negative TB skin test, proof that they have started the Hepatitis “B” vaccination series, a copy of their MMR, Hepatitis B vaccination or denial waiver form, proof of tetanus vaccine within the past 10 years and proof of chicken pox or vaccination.
