Information: Basic Law Enforcement Training

This course is designed to equip the student with the basic skills, knowledge and ability to function as an inexperienced law enforcement officer in the State of North Carolina. This class is a pre-requisite for law enforcement officer certification in this state. The course is composed of blocks of instruction with a state specified minimum number of hours set for each of the blocks. The total number of course hours required for this certification are set by the NC Criminal Justice Commission.

The next delivery of the Basic Law Enforcement Training will begin June 01, 2009. This delivery will be a day class and will continue for approximately 4 months. The application process is currently in progress and seating is limited. A night BLET class will be offered beginning in August or September 2009. This class will be approximately 6 months. Information: Fire Officer I

Online Course - September 8, 2008 – October 31, 2008

The Fire Officer I course is a 40-hour delivery in partnership with Haywood Community College and the North Carolina Department of Insurance, Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM). The course is designed to meet the requirements of NFPA 1021 for the Fire Officer I.

Prior to enrolling in the course, the student must meet the following prerequisites for Fire Officer I according to NFPA 1021 and the NC Fire and Rescue Commission:

  • The candidate must be at least 21 years of age. Training and course work may be completed in advance, but certification cannot be issued until the candidate's 21st birthday. Moreover, the candidate must meet the requirements of the standard in place at the time of his/her birthday even though he/she may have been working toward a previous standard.
  • The candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent recognized by the State Department of Public Instruction (i.e., GED).
  • The candidate must be a member in good standing of a recognized fire service organization for three years and possess the physical ability to perform all tasks associated with his/her assignment.
  • The candidate must be a Certified Firefighter Level II
  • The candidate must be a Certified General Level II Instructor
  • The candidate must complete the registration process for Haywood Community College.
  • The candidate must submit copies of all prerequisite materials and a sponsorship letter from their respective Chief / Training Officer to Haywood Community College to be admitted to the course.

Upon completion of the course, the candidate will be responsible for submitting the completed portfolio to OSFM. The portfolio will be reviewed by the Fire Officer subcommittee and, upon approval, the candidate will be given the opportunity to take the Fire Officer I written examination.
