Jill Mann - Helping Students as Well as Teachers


“Whether I am dancing on the table because they get it or banging my head on the board because they don’t, I was meant to be a teacher,” says Jill Mann, 2007 Haywood County Elementary Math Teacher of the Year.

Jill Mann, Haywood Community College 1999 Associate in Arts graduate was meant to teach and it shows. She was selected as the 2007 Haywood County Schools Elementary Teacher of the Year and North Canton Elementary’s Teacher of the Year for 2007-2008.

Jill is now the school’s Math Coach and co-teaches with all teachers in the entire school, develops lesson plans and manipulatives, works one-on-one or in small groups with students who need additional help, and develops practice tests for the nine-week mark and the 18-week mark. Jill says this position allows her to help students as well as teachers.

She continued her education after HCC at Western Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and is currently pursuing a doctorate in Library Science from Appalachian State University.

“As a math teacher, you have to build on the foundations of math every day,” Jill explains. “Students must see why it works, then they’ll understand it and do it right.
