The HCC Dual Enrollment Program provides an excellent opportunity for high school students to begin their college education early. Through dual enrollment high school students can earn college credit tuition-free while meeting their high school graduation requirements. Dual enrollment or dual/concurrent enrollment as it is generally known, refers to the opportunity for an individual high school student, who is at least 16 years of age and currently enrolled in high school, to be admitted to any curriculum or continuing education course any semester on a space-available basis.

What is a dual enrollment course?

Dual enrollment courses are regular college courses which count toward earning a certificate, diploma, or an associate degree. These courses are college level academic courses not otherwise available within the public schools. When you enroll in a college course you are held to the same academic standards as any other college student. This means you must remain in regular attendance and complete all assignments in a timely fashion. As a college student you will have access to all the college's basic services such as the Teaching and Learning Center, the Library (LRC), and the Cafeteria.

Do I need permission to enroll?

If you are 16 or older and enrolled in at least three high school courses or an equivalent of one-half of the school day, and making appropriate progress toward graduation, you may enroll in a course at HCC tuition free with the permission of a parent or guardian, your high school principal, and the college president. For a student to enroll, both the chief administrator of the school system, whether public or non-public, and the community college president must approve, and your high school principal must certify that you are actually enrolled in high school and making satisfactory progress toward graduation.

How do I sign up for a dual enrollment course?

Register for dual enrollment classes with the Coordinator of Recruitment, located in Student Services. Student Services is located in the large building, with the three flag poles, on your left as you enter the campus and drive up the hill. The Coordinator will help you complete the forms and acquire the necessary permissions. You may contact her by e-mail at prospects.tour@haywood.edu or by telephone at (828) 627-4699. See sample Dual Enrollment Permission Form.

During the application process, indicate on your Application for Admission form, the dual enrollment course and semester that you wish to enroll. Also please complete and return the Dual Enrollment Permission form to Student Services with the appropriate signatures. A student who attends a private or home school must submit a copy of the school's approval from the N.C. Department of Non-Public Instruction.

Where do I take my classes?

The actual location of the course will be on the HCC campus unless you are enrolled in a course offered through distance learning. At HCC students who take courses by distance learning enroll in on-line courses or telecourses. For more information about how distance learning can serve you see Distance Learning.

What will it cost me to take a dual enrollment course at HCC?

High school students who enroll in curriculum courses at HCC are exempt from tuition for courses. You do have to buy your own books which you can do in the college bookstore in person or on-line.

Is transportation provided?

No. Dual enrollment students will need to acquire their own transportation to and from the HCC campus. Dual enrollment students may park in student parking lots but they need a parking sticker. This may be acquired at the college bookstore after a student completes the registration process.

Will I follow HCC’s calendar or my high school calendar?

As a student enrolled in high school, you must follow your high school calendar as it relates to any of your high school classes. However, for your dual enrollment classes at Haywood Community College, you must follow the HCC Academic Calendar as it relates to:

  • Starting and ending dates
  • Final Examination Schedule
  • Holidays, vacations, and faculty workdays
  • Inclement weather or other causes of college closure, delay, or early release.

How will I get my grades?

Students may access their grade report by visiting the college website at www.haywood.edu and selecting the link on the homepage for grades, schedules, and unofficial transcripts.

How many credits will I receive?

You are creating a permanent college transcript that will always be on your record. For successful completion of a course you will receive college credit in terms of semester hours.

Who should I call for more information?

Speak with your high school counselor, call the Coordinator of Recruitment, by e-mail at prospects.tour@haywood.edu, or contact Debbie Rowland (drowland@haywood.edu) at 627-4646.
