Haywood Community College will hold a free Jammin’ at the Mill Pond Celebration on Saturday, October 16. This is a free bluegrass event to showcase the college, its programs and alumni, and the Appalachian heritage of Western North Carolina. It will be held on the main campus from 10 a.m. until 6p.m.
Several vendors will have booths of Appalachian crafts including: stained glass, jewelry, pottery, photography, watercolor and pencil art, upholstery, quilting, rock oil candles, and more. Student clubs will have booths available for demonstration. Some of the demonstrations include blacksmith forging, wildlife and forestry, massage, horticulture, professional crafts, and biodiesel.
Richard Hurley will emcee the event and The Hominy Valley Boys will be headlining with participation from several other area bluegrass bands including Angie Toomey, Hill Country, Cold Mountain, Makayla Reece, the Ross Brothers, and Kim and Kirk Kirkpatrick. Clogging and buckdancing will also be demonstrated. Area musicians are welcome to bring their instruments to join in the jammin’ sessions. There will also be open mic times.
Demonstrations of past mountain traditions will also be demonstrated including, making molasses with HCC instructor David Burnette, corn grinding in the grist mill and corn shelling. Catfish and barbeque dinners with all the fixings, as well as a vegetarian plate will be available to purchase. An alumni tent will feature program reunions throughout the day.
There will also be a free southern gospel singing in the HCC Auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. Performing will be Ronny Henson, The Southmen, and Mountain Joy.
