Haywood Community College will hold a free special marketing workshop for crafts artists called The Business Side of an Artist’s Life on Wednesday, October 23 from 9 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. in the Creative Arts Building Room 7105.

Jon Ellenbogen & Rebecca Plummer have been operating The Barking Spider Pottery for nearly 40 years. Their line of fine stoneware pottery, handmade Christmas ornaments, dinnerware, and custom made bathroom sinks have been seen in over fifty shops and galleries nationwide.

In this workshop, Ellenbogen will share his experience in running a small business as it relates to potters and other self-employed crafts artists.

Topics of the workshop will include: the skills required to run your own small business, strategic decisions, tax considerations, insurance strategies, record keeping and information management, establishing first impressions & credibility, joining professional organizations and guilds, business practices you need to learn, shared studios for economies of scale and less isolation, and starting a co-operative gallery.

For more information about this workshop, please call 828-565-4159.
