"Here to Help" Event Raises $8,000 for Mountain Projects
Haywood Community College Foundation with Haywood Community College and Champion Credit Union sponsored "Here to Help: A Benefit Show for Neighbors in Need" on February 28, 2009. The event was held in response to critical needs of several Haywood County families identified by Mountain Projects. "(Demand for) basic human needs - food, shelter, and heat - have doubled," says Patsy Dowling, executive director of Mountain Projects. "These are the people we need to help." Elizabeth Pressley is one example of a client assisted by Mountain Projects. She has been able to be self-sufficient and make ends meet - until this year when there wasn't any money to buy oil. Mountain Projects stepped in and bought the oil she needed to stay warm this winter. "I probably would have ended up with pneumonia if Mountain Projects hadn't helped me," she said. The Hominy Valley Boys were the first on board when the call went out for performers willing to donate a performance to the show. "Haywood County has been good to us and this is one way that we can give back to the community," said Michael Rathbone, band member. All $8,000 raised during the event went directly to help Mountain Projects clients in Haywood County.
The Hominy Valley Boys brought their show to an audience of one - Elizabeth Pressley.
