For many of our graduates, success started because of the specialized tutoring they received as an HCC student. Each year, about 550 students use the tutoring services of the Teaching and Learning Center to help them grasp the content of some of their courses. So pleased with their success, many of them then become tutors.

Recent graduates, Rachel Brown and Zachary McTaggart are to be commended for their contribution to the tutoring program and their fellow students. Together, in the past year, they contributed over 630 hours. Both were selected as Tutor of the Year for 2007.

Rachel contributed 318 hours of tutoring during the last year in introductory computer classes and a wide range of math classes from basic math and elementary algebra to statistics. She graduated in May with a degree in Associate in Arts and plans to continue her education at Western Carolina University to become a math teacher.

Zachary contributed 314 hours of tutoring during the last year in wildlife management, forest measurements, silviculture, and math classes. He graduated in May from the Fish and Wildlife Management Technology program and began working for the National Park Service in Alaska the week after graduation.

This past year, HCC had over 35 student tutors, 13 faculty and staff tutors, and 4 volunteer tutors. Tutoring services are available in over 38 different subjects. HCC tutors provided over 3,000 hours of one-on-one instruction last year. The tutor program helps students understand coursework better while inspiring them to succeed and believe in themselves.
