The college will be closed on Monday, January 18, 2010 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. However, the following events will take place during the rest of the week.

“I Have a Dream” Speech to Show in Cafe

Original footage of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech given during the 1968 March on Washington will be shown on the television in the Sunrise Café during the lunch break on Tuesday. The speech will be shown three times at 11:40 am, 12:10 pm and 12:40 pm.

Events at Western Carolina University:

  • L.Douglas Wilder, the first African-American elected governor in the United States, will be the keynote speaker for WCU’s annual celebration in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. He will speak at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20 in the Grandroom of the A. K. Hinds University Center.
  • Vigil at the Alumni Tower on Monday, January 18 at 10 a.m.
  • Opening of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Art and Essay Gallery on Monday, January 18 at 1 p.m. on the second floor of the University Center
  • Screening and discussion of the documentary “The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till” in the University Center Theater at 7 p.m.
  • Panel discussion “We Make the Whee: Together We Read” in the Grandroom of the University Center on Tuesday, January 19
  • “Tunnel of Oppression” in the University Center Grandroom from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Thursday, January 21

Events at UNC Asheville:

  • Robert Bullard, who is widely considered the father of environmental justice, will deliver a keynote address at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, in UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. A limited number of tickets for the general public will be available for $5 at the door.
  • A screening of “Let’s Get Real,” a short documentary about advocates, bystanders, bullies and victims will be held 4:30 pm, Thursday, Jan. 21, in UNC Asheville’s Highsmith University Union room 104. The event is free and open to the public.
  • “The Renewal Project,” a documentary on the religious environmental movement, will be shown at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, in the Highsmith University Union Grotto. “The Renewal Project” examines environmental activists from Christian, Jewish, Buddhist and Muslim traditions, who combat global warming and mountaintop removal, and who work to promote food security, environmental justice, recycling and land preservation. The event is free and open to the public.
