Students of Haywood Early College recently a held Release Ceremony for the school’s first yearbook. The yearbook was completely generated by the students with the advisement of instructor Lynn Beddow. Ten students raised enough money to supply each HEC student and faculty member with a color edition of the 2007-2008 yearbook themed “Reel Passion, Real Potential.”

The students also left $850 to start next years’ book as well as a “how-to” manual for the 2009 yearbook staff. But being the first yearbook for the school was viewed by many students as a good opportunity.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to be the first class to have a yearbook at HEC,” said Lauren Foster, assistant editor. “Don’t follow in someone else’s footsteps. You make your own.”

While the road was not always smooth for these students, the experience gained from this first yearbook was tremendous. Students learned digital photography, how to craft logos, sell ads, and maintain financial records, and how to use several computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and Photoshop.

“HEC's first student-generated yearbook is the measurable outcome of the College's print journalism and desktop publishing classes,” Beddow explains. “Students learned and achieved so very much -- from marketing and sales to software packages and production, photography, and team work. Both courses were designed as full-scale project-based learning initiatives to prepare students for the real work world. They thrived, and some may well have found their future niche -- precisely, what quality education should do."

“We want to look back at this 20 years from now and remember this and remember these people,” says Editor Lauren Williamson.

HEC Principal Dr. Doris Greene says, “This is an outstanding example of the many successes we have to look forward to between HCC and HEC. This yearbook is only the beginning.”

The HCC Foundation donated $1,000 to the HEC 2007-2008 Yearbook. For more information on Haywood Early College, please call (828)565-4000.
