Haywood Community College’s Continuing Education Department recently announced the graduation of six students from the JobsNOW Automotive Systems Technology program. William Francis, Greg Hannah, Darrell Houston, John Paul, Denver Hannah, Zach Page, and Wayne Easley all completed the program with skills in both Automotive Services and Automotive Systems, as well as workplace readiness skills and completion of a Career Readiness Certificate. JobsNOW is funded under the Workforce Investment Act through funds made available by the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Paul says he took the class to try something new. “I learned a lot from the class. I lost my job working in the landscape and construction field and hope to able to put what I learned to use.”
Hannah agrees. “I was unemployed and felt like this class could help me get a job. I received very thorough instruction with instructors experienced in their field.”
Francis says he will continue classes at HCC. “I hope to become ASE certified. This has been a great opportunity. I picked up a lot.”
The continuing education department will offer an Auto Maintenance class beginning on September 20 through January 1 on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m. Cost of the class is $175.
The course is designed to provide the student with in-depth entry level skills to standards for automotive technicians in local industries. Students should be able to perform basic diagnosis, measurement, and repair of automotive engines using appropriate equipment, procedures, and service information. Students will be able to demonstrate ability to service and repair steering and suspension components, check and adjust alignment angles, repair tires, and balance wheels. In addition, students should be able to locate and interpret vehicle and major component identification numbers (VIN, vehicle certification labels, and calibration decals).
