HCC Announces Winners in Photo Contest

Haywood Community College recently announced the winners of the school’s first photo contest. “Learning to Swim,” by HCC student Samantha Faust won first place. “Safe at Home,” by HCC Adult Education instructor Karma Shuford was the second place winner. Phillip Turner, HCC Lead Computer Technician, took third place with “Sunset at the Lake.” People’s Choice award went to HCC student Kira Farrington for “Dead End.” The Honorable Mention awards included “Tanner Makes 3” by HCC Enrollment Management Technician Laura Simmons, “Through the Years” by Shuford, and “Sandscreen” by Faust.

The photo contest was open to all HCC faculty, staff, students, alumni, and board members. In addition, the college community as well as members of the community could vote for the People’s Choice winner. Winning artwork is on display in the HCC library and on the college website for one year.

The HCC photo contest was sponsored by the HCC Foundation. First place winner received $250, second and third place winners received $50, and People’s Choice winner won $150.

 “The HCC Foundation was please to support this new initiative on campus,” says HCC Director of Institutional Advancement Sherri Myers. “The goal was to bring together the people of the community and the college.”

In addition to a committee from HCC, Ed Kelley served as a juror. He is a Haywood County native and HCC alum. He spent over a year living on Mt. Mitchell, where he served as naturalist and pursued his interest in photography. Although Kelley’s interests range from wildlife to macro photography, capturing the moods of ever-changing light has always intrigued him.
