HCC COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMS OFFER A VARIETY OF CRAFT AND PERSONAL ENRICHMENT CLASSES

Now is the time to sign up for one or more of Haywood Community College’s many Community Service Programs. With the variety of courses offered—from self-help classes such as the one-day seminar,"Coping with Bullies, Gossips, Know-it-alls and Complainers" to craft technique classes like "Beginning Quilting" a person is sure to find one that suits him or her.

Students receive excellent guidance and training from expert instructors. They can learn woodcarving from Ken Mayhew, a nationally renowned woodcarver or they can build and learn to play a cardboard box dulcimer with instructor, Jon Cooley. Learn basic upholstery from 17-year veteran instructor, Lani Hendrix, or take advantage of Kathy Warren’s 13-year teaching experience in decorative painting. These are just a few options.

While many of the instructors have taught classes for several years, the college also strives to bring in outside professionals to teach specialty workshops such as "Smart Investing".

Rinda Greene, HCC Community Service Program Coordinator, said, " In the Community Service Programs, we promote "life-long learning". We make every effort to provide the community with informative and creative workshops and courses for residents of all ages. By continuing to introduce new classes, we hope to give even more people a chance to learn a new skill, craft or to just have fun."

Dorothy Smiley, a recent pine-cone craft and chair caning student, says that she has been taking community service classes at HCC for over ten years. Taking such courses as sewing, upholstery, furniture refinishing and woodcarving she has developed many useful skills over the years. "Going to class gives me the incentive to work on my project. I also like being a part of the group fellowship." Smiley said.
