Haywood Community College Community Volunteer Tutor, Leora Schermerhorn was recently selected as one of three finalists for the Angela Moore Trogdon Award for Volunteer/Tutor of the Year. This award was established in memory of Angela Moore Trogdon, former Basic Skills/HRD Director at Randolph Community College and Guilford Technical Community College who died of breast cancer. Nominations are open to all colleges in the North Carolina Community College System.

Schermerhorn, a retired community college English instructor, began tutoring in the HCC Teaching & Learning Center in 2001. She says, “I enjoy tutoring for the same reasons I love teaching; helping students understand the course material, watching them become more confident in their classes, and instilling a love of learning.”

Last year more than 500 HCC students were helped through the tutoring program for a total of 2,800 hours. According to Elaine Barnes, Student Success Services Director, “Community volunteers enhance the teaching and learning environment by helping students in a positive, caring way. Our volunteers spend one-on-one quality time teaching students.”

The award is given to those who provide exceptional service and commitment in tutoring. It is designed to honor deserving people for outstanding accomplishments and providing instruction in Basic Skills programs across North Carolina. As a finalist, Schermerhorn was interviewed and recognized at the 2008 Basic Skills Family Literacy Conference in August.

The HCC Teaching & Learning Center’s Peer Tutoring program has grown over the last few years in no small part to the efforts of community volunteers. New volunteers are always welcome to the program. Please contact the Teaching & Learning Center at 627-4696 for additional information.
