Haywood Community College’s Continuing Education Department is offering several different courses in Creative Arts, Health and Wellness, Simply Stitches, and Career Exploration and Enhancement Skills. These courses will be offered throughout February, March, and April.

The Health and Wellness Courses include various topics such as Herbal Remedies for the Family, Coping with Chronic Pain or Self Care Techniques for Living with Chronic Pain, Staying Healthy in Stressful Times, Moving to a Whole Foods Lifestyle, Staying Healthy on a Budget, Caring for an Elderly Parent, Grief and Loss, Stretches for Easing Pain, Four Reasons Children Misbehave, and Natural Remedies for Family Care.

The Creative Arts course offerings include Acrylic Painting, Oil Painting, and Painting Workshop. In the Acrylic Painting class, students will experience the many uses of Acrylic paint to create a painting with flair, color, and texture. Topics will cover how to work with colors in a new way and create a wide range of textures. Participants will learn the fun of layering colors to create wonderful paintings, use perspective and color to create depth in paintings, and learn the use of brushes, palette knives, and other tools. The course will be held on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. beginning on February 23 and will run through March 23.

The Oil Painting course will cover how to effectively use color, create various textures, use perspective and different values to create depth in paintings, care and use of various brushes and palette knives, and about painting surfaces. The Oil Painting course will be held on Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. beginning on March 8 through March 22.

Through the Simply Stitches courses, students may choose Contemporary Landscape Quilting, Quilting Workshop, Knitting, Knitting Workshop, or Sewing classes.

The Contemporary Landscape Quilting class will teach participants to use beads and other embellishments to interpret a fairy tale or nursery rhyme for a grandchild, interpret a photograph of their home or mountain scene, or create a fantasy or dream landscape to decorate a wall. The class will concentrate on the elements in the landscape; how to best interpret them showing color, dimension and other special details; the best way to apply or piece the fabric; and other finishing details. The artful piece could be backed and finished, could be mounted on stretched canvas, or become the medallion in a bigger quilt.
