Haywood Community College Professional Crafts - Fiber students recently delivered a Navajo rug they crafted to the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock. The students were commissioned to craft a replica of a worn and faded Navajo rug that once was in the Carl Sandburg home.
The project took extensive research to learn how to do traditional Navajo art. Not only did the students have to learn a new style of weaving but they also had to experiment with dye. Sometimes it took several tries to get the colors to match closely to the original rug. Students used the original rug as reference when they were creating the weaving and color pattern. The students each took turns working on the rug. It took all semester to complete the time-intensive project.
The HCC Foundation received $2,300 for the commission of this project to be used in the Fiber Department. Students who worked on the project include: Joan Berner, Angela Jenkins, Deborah Bartz, Angela Kane, Stephanie Costa, and Yvonne Engler. In addition, HCC Fiber alumni who helped with the project include: Teena Tuenge, Mary Lucas, and Susan Phillips.
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Carl Sandburg and communicating the stories of his works, life and significance as an American poet, writer, historian, biographer of Abraham Lincoln, and social activist. The museum collection which preserves Carl Sandburg’s personal belongings, furnishings, farm equipment, library, and papers, provides a unique and rare perspective of this American author’s lifestyle, philosophy, intellectual pursuits, and life experiences.
