The Haywood Community College Foundation Annual Fund Drive is underway. The goal of the drive is to raise $200,000. HCC employees recently enjoyed a kickoff luncheon for the annual fund drive.

The HCC Foundation exits to aid, strength, and further the work and service of HCC by securing financial support. Gifts to the Foundation provide support to help improve the quality of the educational environment for students, faculty, staff and the entire community. Funds are used to assist with student emergency needs, student and campus programs, college-wide needs and scholarships.

An example of how funds are used is the mini-grant program. Twice a year, mini-grants are awarded for staff and faculty initiatives, student instructional support, student experiential learning, and professional development. Awards are decided by the Foundation’s mini-grant committee. For spring 2010, 13 mini-grants were awarded totaling $8,400.

A recent example of a mini-grant award is for the Veteran’s Wall of Honor. The Wall of Honor is the capstone project for the 2009-2010 College Advisory Council and will be erected on the college campus to recognize HCC students, faculty, staff, retirees, and alumni who have served in the United States Armed Services.

Some of the campus events sponsored by the HCC Foundation this year are the Job Fair, College Night, Honor’s Day, the College Advisory Council luncheons, departmental strategic planning meetings, and National Entrepreneurship Week activities.

One of the most recent events the Foundation sponsored was the Scholarship Recognition Event. This event celebrates the generosity of donors and the students who have a desire to succeed. The HCC Foundation awarded 115 students scholarships totaling over $114,000. This was thirty-seven percent of the students who applied for a scholarship through the Foundation. Many of the students receiving a scholarship find that it is the only way possible for them to attend college.

According to Steve Kaufman, HCC Foundation Board Member and donor, "I support Haywood Community College because it is just so important to the vitality of our community. Economically the benefits are obvious: providing an educated workforce as well as numerous other benefits for area businesses. However the college also provides many social and cultural benefits to our community. Well known programs such as production crafts and forestry provide us with a tremendous source of community pride, as well as a talented and diverse workforce. It's impossible to imagine Haywood County without HCC."

By investing in the College’s students, faculty and programs, donors help ensure excellence in educational programs, training, and services for our community in the future. For more information about the HCC Foundation or to make a donation, please call 627-4522.
