Haywood Community College instructor Jim McClure was named Pisgahteer Teacher of the Year at Pisgah High School recently. Students vote to decide who will win this honor. As part of the recognition, the yearbook is dedicated to the Pisgahteer Teacher of the Year. The Dedication page for McClure is titled Fueled By Compassion.
“This is not just a job,” McClure says. “I am here for the students. I love what I do.”
McClure teaches automotive systems classes to Huskins students. He began working at HCC part-time in 1999 and became full-time in 2004. He has been at Pisgah since becoming full-time. In addition, he teaches Automotive classes through HCC’s Continuing Education Department.
At Pisgah, McClure describes what he teaches as basic maintenance so students can learn how to take care of their own vehicle. Students particularly enjoy that his classes are hands-on and they can often work on their own cars at school.
PHS student Matthew Curry says, “Jim McClure is a great inspiration to me and many others who attend our school and having the yearbook commemorate him is a fitting honor.”
Fellow student Samantha Williams says, “Jim McClure is a wonderful teacher. He has pushed many students to go on to college and become something in their life. He has shown students how to work on cars and earned our respect along with our friendship.”
“Working on cars is something I have always done for fun,” McClure explains. “I can’t believe I actually get paid for it. I am teaching these students something that will never go away. Car maintenance will always exist.”
