FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HCC IMPLEMENTS PATHWAYS PROGRAM
Haywood Community College recently implemented a new program called Pathways. The program is a flexible, short-term program designed to prepare students to enter the workforce as better skilled employees.
Currently, students enrolled in the program may choose to obtain certifications in four areas of study— Basic Construction Skills, Computer/Office Applications, Certified Nursing Assistant, and Food Service and Safety. In addition to learning the necessary occupational skills required for certification in occupational fields, students also study math and communication skills, workforce reading, and life skills. They explore self-management, job hunting skills, employment expectations and work on leadership development.
Fifteen students are presently enrolled in the Pathways program—11 in Computer/Office Applications, 3 in the CNA curriculum and one in Basic Construction Skills.
Funding for the program comes from personal resources and the Workforce Investment Act, Job Corp, the Department of Social Services and Vocational Rehabilitation. For questions concerning eligibility and funding contact the following—Kyle Ledford, Workforce Investment Act, (828) 456-6061; Ruth McCoy, Job Corp, (828) 497-5411; Pat Hawkins, Department of Social Services, (828) 452-6620 and Coleen Blaylock, Vocational Rehabilitation, (828) 456-3111.
The next session of Pathways begins March 13, 2000. For additional information contact the HCC Adult Basic Skills Department at (828) 627-4643.
