The Haywood Community College Continuing Education Department will offer an eight week Fundamentals of Green Building Course through the JobsNOW Program and a grant from the NC Rural Economic Development Center beginning on August 30. The course will teach participants skills that will aid in finding a job in the emerging green construction industry.

The Fundamentals of Green Building Course consists of three components: classroom instruction on the fundamental theories, practices, and materials used in green building construction including the “Certified Green Professional Course” sponsored by the National Association of Home Builders; a Boots-on-the-Ground Work Site Training Lab which engages participants in hands-on construction site activities involving green building principles and concepts; and employability training to prepare participants to locate good jobs, success in securing a good job, and keeping the job, as well as an opportunity to earn a Career Readiness Certificate and learn Work Place Readiness skills.

Classroom instruction will include many topics such as principles of residential building science, sustainable building technologies, responsible resource management, survey of green building rating systems, responsible site development, basic computer essentials, basic construction site mathematics, and Excel Spreadsheet for construction site estimating and scheduling.

The JobsNOW “12 in 6” Project allows students to complete classes in less than 6 months of time. JobsNOW is funded under the Workforce Investment Act through funds made available by the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009, the Department of Commerce, Division of Workforce Development and the local Workforce Development Board.

Various forms of financial assistance are available. Cost for the class is $350 for registration and $205 for books. The class will also be offered on October 11 and November 15.
