Haywood Community College joins a record number of colleges and universities across the United States and Canada in RecycleMania 2010. The competition will run ten weeks until March 27. During the 2009 competition, a total of 69.4 million pounds were recycled by participating schools.
Some other schools in North Carolina that are also participating in RecycleMania are Appalachian State University, Brevard College, Fayetteville Technical Community College, Montreat College, and Wilson Community College. The competition is a program of the RecycleMania Steering Committee in coordination with the College and University Recycling Council (CURC).
RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. During the competition, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate.
HCC is participating in the Waste Minimization Category. In the first week, the college sent over 1,900 pounds of paper, cardboard, aluminum and plastic to the recycling center, as well as over 3,500 pounds of scrap metal. Over 500 pounds of wood salvaged from campus has been re-used and over 100 pounds of food waste from the cafe has been added to HCC’s compost pile.
According to Alan Morrow, HCC Campus Arboretum Team Leader, “Participating in RecycleMania is just another way to highlight what HCC does every day to incorporate sustainability into campus life. Through this initiative, we hope to encourage students, faculty, and staff to consider additional ways to recycle and re-use products on campus.”
Overall Goals for RecycleMania are to: have a fair and friendly recycling competition; increase recycling participation by students and staff; heighten awareness of schools' waste management and recycling programs; expand economic opportunities while addressing environmental issues in a positive way; lower waste generated on-campus by reducing, reusing and recycling; have the competition act as a catalyst for colleges and universities to build and expand waste reduction programs on campus.
RecycleMania is made possible through the sponsorship support of The Coca Cola Company, American Forest & Paper Association and Keep America Beautiful.
