HCC Prepares for Fall Semester

Faculty and staff members at Haywood Community College are making final preparations for the start of Fall semester 2010. Prospective students are encouraged to complete the application process as soon as possible. Student Services staff are available to answer questions about the application process, financial aid, or any of HCC’s more than 50 programs of study.

Final registration is Thursday, August 12 and Friday August 13. Student Services hours are 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday and 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Friday. The first day of fall semester is Monday, August 16.

New this semester is Healthcare Business Informatics. This curriculum prepares individuals for employment as specialists in installation, data management, data archiving/retrieval, system design and support, and computer training, for medical information systems. Students learn about the field through multidisciplinary coursework including the study of terminology relating to informatics, system analysis, networking technology, computer/network security, data warehousing, archiving and retrieval of information, and healthcare computer infrastructure support.

Graduates should qualify for employment as database/data warehouse analysts, technical support professionals, informatics technology professionals, systems analysts, networking and security technicians, and computer maintenance professionals in the healthcare field.    

Several courses are also available for the Low Impact Development program and the Green Building certificate. Environmental Science will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 am. Until 10:45 a.m. This course covers the environmental problems facing society today. Topics include population, natural resources, air and water pollution, and waste disposal problems. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate insight into the role the individual plays in shaping the environment.

The Low Impact Development Design Principles course will be offered on Mondays from 10 a.m. until 11:50 a.m. The lab will be held on Mondays from 1 p.m. until 3:50 p.m. This course introduces design principles of Low Impact Development which incorporate sustainable development and natural resources management as an alternative to traditional site design. Topics include science- based interdisciplinary design practices including tools from civil and environmental engineering, hydrology, horticulture, ecology, and architecture. Upon completion, students should be able to use multifaceted approaches to recommend site-specific LID design concepts for residential, public, and commercial sites.

The Low Impact Development Practical Application course will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. until 11:50 a.m. or 1 p.m. until 1:50 p.m. with the lab running on Thursdays from 2 p.m. until 4:50 p.m. This course covers applications of Low Impact Development design leading to sustainable site development and the protection of natural resources. Topics include the application of science-based interdisciplinary design practices including tools from civil and environmental engineering, hydrology, horticulture, ecology, and architecture. Upon completion, students should be able to recognize and give examples of multifaceted approaches used in site-specific development designs for residential, public, and commercial sites.

The Sustainable Building Design course will run on Tuesdays from 12 p.m. until 1:50 p.m. with the lab on Fridays from 1 p.m. until 3:50 p.m. This course is designed to increase student knowledge about integrating sustainable design principles and green building technologies into mainstream residential construction practices. Emphasis is placed on reducing negative environmental impact and improving building performance, indoor air quality and the comfort of a building's occupants. Upon completion, students should be able to identify principles of green building, environmental efficiency and conservation of natural resources in relation to basic construction practices.
