Haywood Community College was recently presented a check from Progress Energy in the amount of $29,391 through the company’s Energy Efficiency for Business Program. The program is designed to provide incentives for energy efficiency measures that are implemented throughout retrofit or new construction projects and furthers sustainability efforts by decreasing environmental impacts as much as possible. Incentives are paid based on the quantity, size, and efficiency of the technology or equipment that is installed, replaced, or removed.

The college retrofitted over 2,300 4-foot fixtures and lamps from T12 to T8 and changed 39 exit signs to LED. These changes will reduce usage by 438,000 kWh per year and result in annual savings of $35,057. In addition to the energy cost reduction, the college will benefit from improved lighting quality.

HCC strives to be a leader in sustainable initiatives through teaching, demonstrating, and using sustainable development technologies that promote the economic, environmental and social health of the college and the communities it serves. Participating in the Energy Efficiency for Business Program is another example of incorporating sustainable practices in the college’s everyday processes.
