Haywood Community College received the top ranking in the state of North Carolina in the Waste Minimization category in the RecycleMania 2012 competition. This is the third consecutive year the college has received this distinction. In addition, HCC is ranked as number 14 in North America in the Waste Minimization Category out of 605 participating colleges. The top five ranked colleges in North Carolina that participated in the eight week long tournament are in order; Haywood Community College, UNC Greensboro, NC State University, Guilford, and UNC Chapel Hill. Results are posted at http://recyclemaniacs.org.
RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. During the competition, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate.
The cumulative greenhouse gas reductions for HCC during the tournament are equal to 24 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which equals 13 cars off the road or the energy consumption of 6 households. Participating in RecycleMania is just another way to highlight what HCC does every day to incorporate sustainability into campus life.
