HCC Selects Student Ambassadors

HCC SELECTS STUDENT AMBASSADORS

Haywood Community College recently chose four current students to serve as student ambassadors for the 1999-2000 academic year. Kari Beerer, Chad Bowden, Josh Kuhlmann and Gaelyn Evangreene assumed their responsibilities at the beginning of the fall semester.

The student ambassadors act as liaisons between HCC and the community. Their activities are varied and include conducting campus tours, participating in special campus events, making presentations at local high schools, speaking to community businesses and assisting during registration. In exchange for their service to the college, the ambassadors receive free tuition and a professional outfit of clothing.

Beerer, a first year nursing student, would like to someday work on an emergency medical flight team. She says, "HCC not only has a beautiful campus but wonderful teachers too. I love the way everyone seems to just fit in."

Bowden chose HCC because of its location and its top-notch fish and wildlife technology program. Bowden will graduate in the spring and hopes eventually to work for the State Wildlife Commission. He also takes an active part in the HCC Outdoor Club.

Kuhlmann liked what he heard about HCC so much that he came all the way from Billings, Montana to become a professional crafts student in the woodworking program. He will graduate in the spring and has plans to continue his education in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in business and marketing.

This is Evangreene’s second year as a student ambassador. Her experiences in the Horticulture program have been rewarding. She says, "I am always impressed with the availability of my instructors and their willingness to help—not just with school work but with guiding you toward career choices for later on." Evangreene will graduate in the spring and hopes to one day open her own business. She is also an active member in the HCC Horticulture Club.

Faculty and staff nominated the students. The ambassadors were selected based on communication skills, leadership potential, academic qualifications and a belief in HCC’s mission.
