Haywood Community College Criminal Justice Alliance student Justin Hatherlee recently attended the Student Leadership Institute. He was one of only thirty students selected to attend the institute from all the community colleges in the state.

The institute was developed to broaden leadership training opportunities for North Carolina's Community College students and to prepare them for professional and civic responsibilities. Students are provided information and tools through many varying workshops and then challenged to put their knowledge to work through group and individual projects.

Participants in the institute learn many concepts such as proper etiquette, motivational and communication skills, organizational skills, time management, planning and goal setting, planning and administering a budget, and business and personal ethics.

“Participating in the institute completely changed how I view things,” Hatherlee says. “Now I realize the importance of teamwork and leadership skills and how to work with other personalities. I also learned a lot about myself.”

Hatherlee will hold two teamwork and leadership workshops for students during the next academic year. He will also attend two more mini sessions through the Student Leadership Institute.

Hatherlee served as a Student Ambassadors for the 2009-2010 academic year at HCC and will represent the school again for the 2010-2011 year. He is also a member of the Criminal Justice Club. Hatherlee is from Canton and graduated from Pisgah High School. He works as part of the dietary staff of Silver Bluff Nursing Home. After graduating from HCC, he plans to continue his education to pursue a Bachelor’s degree. Hatherlee is a musician and enjoys exercising, writing, playing sports, and reading.
