Haywood Community College student Logan Hawks recently placed number three in the nation in The Official STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series Collegiate Lumberjack Competition. This is the third top place finisher for HCC since 2007.
Hawks is a 2014 Fish and Wildlife Management Technology graduate and will finish the Forest Management Technology program in the spring of 2015. In addition, Hawks is employed by the Lumberjack Feud in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
The Hudson, NC native began competing in lumberjack sports when he became a student at HCC. Hawks learned about HCC’s natural resources programs and Timbersports Team from his high school Future Farmers of America teacher who also attended HCC.
Hawks says, “The HCC team is used to being a top finisher in the competitions they attend, even against four-year schools. Other schools view HCC as a serious opponent but we always have fun.”
Hawks is also having fun at the Lumberjack Feud where he practices his skills doing sometimes 2 to 3 shows per day. “I started training at the Lumberjack feud as a student at HCC. I get to compete with my co-workers and get paid for it. It doesn’t feel like a job to me. Some of the best choppers in the world work there and it makes me really push myself. The show is 100% real.”
Growing up, Hawks says he watched his dad work as a game warden and always knew he wanted to go into the natural resources field. At HCC, he says the hands-on program really makes what is learned in the classroom stick. “We are outside every day. It makes it click when you do something hands-on. It gives you confidence that you know what you’re doing when you go into the field every day.”
Not surprisingly, Hawks says in his spare time he enjoys hunting, fishing, and any other outdoor sports.
