HCC TEACHING AND LEARNING CENTER RECOGNIZES TUTORS

Haywood Community College recently recognized tutors at the school's fourth annual Honors Day Ceremony. Student, faculty, and community tutors were recognized for their valuable contributions to student success. Awards and certificates were presented to 41 student, 11 faculty, and 3 community volunteer tutors. Haywood Community College tutors have provided around 2000 hours of tutoring during the last scholastic year.

Elaine Barnes and Judi Martin of the Teaching and Learning Center praise tutors for their ongoing efforts to help students. Student tutors give up lunch hours, stay after class, and work late to help their classmates better understand course ideas. Faculty volunteers give above and beyond their hours in class to provide math, writing, and computer labs to help students needing one-on-one instruction. Community volunteers give freely of their time and academic talents to work individually with students.

"We would not be able to provide the academic support that we do without these tutors," said Elaine Barnes, TLC Coordinator. "Tutors make such a difference in these student's success by providing one-on-one attention. Sometimes it's a difference in passing a class." Barnes says that student, faculty, and community tutors come together to help students learn in a positive way that works.
