HCC TEACHING AND LEARNING CENTER TO OFFER FREE IN-HOUSE ONLINE TUTORING
The Haywood Community College Teaching and Learning Center recently became the first community college in North Carolina to offer free in-house online tutoring. The service will be available to full and part-time students beginning this fall semester.
Rich Garrett, state auditor, recently reviewed and approved the program noting that this is the pilot program for the state.
"There are several on-line tutoring programs available; however, we wanted to earn FTE's for the college and there was not an affordable tutoring program available in compliance with state guidelines," explains Elaine Barnes, TLC Coordinator. "This project really shows how the community spirit within the community college system works to help everybody improve services."
As distance learning classes have grown over the last few years, more students have had the need for online tutoring. Students who live in other states or throughout North Carolina will now be able to get help. But the need has also been present for traditional students who may not be able to make it on campus during the Teaching and Learning Center's hours. The online tutoring program will be ideal for students who have jobs, children, or other responsibilities. It is a flexible alternative to face-to-face tutoring.
Susan Roberts, Natural Resources Learning Specialist, developed an FTE Generating On-Line Tutoring Program using Blackboard. Roberts, in conjunction with other key people at HCC, made the online tutoring idea become reality.
"This is a huge opportunity for HCC," Roberts explains. "A key component of the success of our students is being able to offer them support when they need it. It's exciting what we can do when we use what resources we have in place."
The Teaching and Learning Center allows up to five hours of free tutoring per week per subject area during any one term. HCC tutors provided around 2000 hours of tutoring during the last scholastic year. For more information about the HCC Teaching and Learning Center, how to log on to the online tutoring program, or if you are interested in tutoring, please call 627-4696.
