Haywood Community College will soon offer another chance for students as well as the public to get outdoors and get moving. The college will soon add a disc golf course to its campus. The 18-hole, par 3 course will be completed through participation with the College Matching Baskets Program. This program is sponsored by the Disc Golf Foundation. Nine baskets are supplied free of charge if the college purchases nine baskets.
Plans are to complete the initial nine baskets by January with the last nine to be completed by summer. The course is a healthy way to incorporate almost two miles of walking across campus while enjoying the new sport. The course will be open to the public and is free of charge.
According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, disc golf is played like traditional golf using a flying disc instead of balls and clubs. The objective is to complete each hole in the fewest number of throws. Disc golf is an affordable sport with equipment starting at around $8 and running up to about $24. A disc or set of discs can be purchased at local sports stores as well as online.
HCC is currently accepting sponsorships and donations to purchase and install the 9 baskets that are required for the College Matching Baskets Program. All sponsors will be recognized on the course kiosk and scorecards. Sponsors who donate $300 or more will receive additional recognition.
The Waynesville Disc Golf Club has announced that a tournament will be held at the Vance Street Park on November 1 to raise money for the HCC Disc Golf Course. For more information about the HCC disc golf course, how to make a donation, or on the November 1 tournament, please call (828) 406-0069.
