Beginning this fall, Haywood Community College will offer a series of short courses on hardwood lumber inspection, saw filing/sharpening, and log-grading and scaling. Short-courses, ranging from 2 to 5 days, will be offered through the college’s continuing education program and held on campus at the sawmill training facility.
The short courses are part of a pilot effort funded by the United States Forest Service Wood Education Resource Center. Future courses are planned for 2009 to meet industry needs in other areas such as PLC maintenance/operation and various aspects of sawing operations.
The first course available is Hardwood Lumber Grading. The dates are October 28 through 30. Tuition is $300 per participant and includes lunches and instructional materials and supplies. The objective of the course is to give the student the basic knowledge of hardwood lumber grades and how to apply the rules in grading, measuring, tallying and manufacturing lumber.
