Dr. Janice Gilliam, Haywood Community College’s Vice President of Student Success Services, has accepted the position of president at Northeast State Community College. She will replace Dr. Bill Locke who is retiring. Gilliam was recommended over two other finalists.
Tennessee Board of Regents Chancellor Charles Manning says, “Regent Paul Montgomery joined me for a visit to Haywood Community College. We encountered enormous and universal admiration for the work and commitment of Dr. Gilliam.”
Gilliam began work at HCC as Cosmetology Program Coordinator. After 13 years in the Cosmetology program at HCC, she became Vice President of Student Development Services in 2000 where she led a department of about 50 part-time and full-time employees, including Developmental Education, High School Programs, and Haywood Early College.
“HCC played a major role in the development of my personal and professional life,” Gilliam says. “The people have been great to work with at the college and in the community. I’ve had many opportunities to learn and grow and build relationships. I hope I’ve been able to give back to the college and community a portion of what they’ve given me.”
Gilliam has an associate degree in vocational education from Isothermal Community College, a bachelor’s degree in occupational education from Western Carolina University, a master’s of industrial education from Western Carolina, and an educational doctorate from North Carolina State University. While obtaining each of these four degrees, she worked full-time and raised three sons. In addition, she owned her own salon for 14 years.
In 2008, Gilliam was selected for HCC’s Superior Staff Award. HCC awards the Superior Staff Award to a staff member who provides the college with exemplary service. These staff members have demonstrated consistent, excellent performance on the job, exhibiting unselfish devotion to duty far and above normal requirements and have provided significant contribution to the advancement of the institution and its students. Recipients show initiative, innovation and leadership in the workplace, and model a commitment to life-long learning.
“I couldn’t be where I am now without the community college system. It opened the door for me for work and education,” Gilliam explains. “You never know where it could lead you.”
Gilliam is a member of Haywood County Rotary. She volunteers for United Way, Habitat for Humanity, and the Open Door Soup Kitchen. In addition to her three sons, she has four grandchildren. She enjoys sewing, playing tennis, camping at Cades Cove, and reading. Her favorite topic to read is leadership and organizational skills with authors such as John Maxwell, Ken Blanchard, and Jack Welch.
Gilliam will begin her position at Northeast State Community College on August 1.
