At Haywood Community College’s 2008 GED and Adult High School graduation ceremony, seventy-eight students received a GED and approximately eight received Adult High School diplomas. Of the 78 GED graduates, 40 received their GED from training held at the Haywood Correctional Center.
Guest speaker Holly Lemieux, Executive Director of the ARC of Haywood County and 2000 HCC Associate in Arts graduate, told those in attendance, “HCC was my compass that gave me direction when I didn’t have any.”
Student speaker Lyle Moose said, “As you all know in today’s society, you need an education. Without one, a high-paying job is almost impossible. Now that I have received my GED, the window of opportunity has been opened for me and the sky’s the limit.” He plans to attend classes at HCC and eventually open an automotive restoration shop which will do everything from automotive machining to paint and body work.
Student speaker Brandy Grogan also plans to continue her education at HCC. “Shortly after I completed the GED, I was able to find a good paying job, one that I actually enjoy going to, with good pay, and great benefits,” she said. “For me the GED was a stepping stone to a better future.”
HCC’s Adult High School Program graduated its first class in 2002 with eight graduates. AHS meets at the Hazelwood Job Annex Site. Since 1970, the HCC GED program has graduated over 4500 students.
Anyone interested in obtaining a GED may choose from three convenient options: the traditional classroom setting, online classes, and GED Express. GED Express allows busy individuals the chance to fit classes into their schedule in just an evening and a Saturday. After completing the two express classes, students are then ready to take the official GED tests.
