HCC’S HOLDS TUTOR RECOGNITION DAY
Haywood Community College’s Help Center recently hosted Tutor Recognition Day in appreciation of tutor’s contributions at HCC to student success and student retention. HCC student tutors, as well as faculty and community volunteer tutors were recognized at an awards ceremony and reception held at noon.
Dr. Nathan Hodges, President of Haywood Community College, praised tutors for their efforts noting that over 50 students are tutored per semester for a total of 500-700 hours. Dr. Michael Germano, Acting Dean of Academic Services, spoke of the importance of volunteerism and its positive influence to the college’s community of learners. Mary Elizabeth Staiger, General Education Division Chair, thanked tutors on behalf of her math and English instructors.
Elaine Barnes, Instructor and Help Center Coordinator, Cathe Alfrey, Help Center Technician, and Dick Kuhl, Help Center Instructor, presented special awards and certificates of appreciation to the following tutors:
Kim Bruner, Amber Buckner, Jeremy Cagle, Veronica Dooly, Heather Fair, Janice Ford, Diana Garlough, Dominique Gross, Anna Hall-Dyer, Pat Israel, Kimbra Jenkins, Billy Keller, Lisa Knight, Jennifer Ladowski, Josh Lister, Janet Manning, Charlene Miller, Rosalee Miller, Emily Stanley, Meridyth Taylor, Julian Vaughan, and Deborah Whitmire.
Tutoring hours ranged from 4-145 per tutor.
Dominique Gross, Business Education student, received a special award for "Tutor of the Year." Bill Rhodarmer, General Education math instructor, received a certificate of appreciation as "Faculty Volunteer of the Year." James Bond and Leora Schermerhorn received special awards and certificates as "Community Volunteers of the Year" in recognition of their contributions to the college.
"We rely on tutors as important links to our students’ success," said Elaine Barnes, Help Center Coordinator. "Tutoring provides one-on-one instructional support that helps students learn."
