Recent Haywood Community College Accounting graduate Jennifer Durrett received a $2,000 scholarship from the North Carolina CPA Foundation. She is one of only three community college graduates to win this scholarship for 2010. This is the second time in three years that a student from HCC has received a NC CPA Foundation Scholarship.

According to the Foundation, the NC CPA Foundation was established in 1980 to promote accounting education in North Carolina. The primary mission is to provide academic scholarships to North Carolina students enrolled in a college or university accounting program within this state.

This year, the Foundation's annual merit scholarship program received a total of 125 applications from students at 22 North Carolina colleges, universities, and community colleges. The scholarship awards are determined by academic achievement, grade point average of at least 3.0, the quality of a required essay graded equally on content and grammar, and non-academic activities.

Durrett recently worked as Teller Supervisor at the BB&T branch in Waynesville and managed five employees. She works for A & R Accounting in Asheville. She has started classes in the Masters of Accountancy program at Western Carolina University. Her hobbies are horseback riding, gardening, and knitting.

AT HCC, Durrett finished an associate degree with a 4. 0 grade point average, received the President’s Award, was recognized as an outstanding student in accounting at Honor’s Day, and gold WorkKeys certificate recipient. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Math from UNC-Chapel Hill.

“At HCC, I received individual attention,” Durrett says. “It was more personal than a larger school. Teachers had the time to get to know you. I also was able to take classes around my schedule.”

The following excerpt was from the essay Durrett wrote when applying for the NC CPA Foundation scholarship: “I think some keys to success for a Certified Public Accountant are having a good reputation, being financially sound and wise, making a positive impact on your community, and being respected by your peers. A CPA should be someone that is known to be honest, reliable, and competent. A successful CPA is one who will explain issues to his clients in terms they can understand, make them feel secure and at ease, and make sure that she has up-to-date and correct information on the issues that affect them.”
