Cox Family Establishes Scholarship at Haywood Community College
The Gerald P. and Meilia S. Cox Family Foundation Scholarship was established recently at Haywood Community College to benefit full-time nursing students. The scholarship will provide two HCC students with a $1,000 scholarship for both fall and spring semester annually.
The Cox family is from Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Gerald is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Autumn Corporation which was founded in 1979. Autumn Corporation provides quality physical, occupational, and speech rehabilitation care throughout its more than 20 nursing centers in North Carolina and Virginia. The corporation employs over 3,300 employees. Haywood County is home to one of the facilities, Autumn Care, located in Waynesville.
“Several of our employees are graduates of HCC We wanted to acknowledge HCC’s contribution to our workforce by helping others achieve their educational goals ,” said Meilia Cox
Meilia Cox is very active in community service including Meals on Wheels, hospital volunteer, and church. She also spends a lot of time with her grandchildren.
The scholarship is given to assist students attending HCC to pursue their goal of a college education to prepare as nurses to meet the workforce needs of the healthcare industry. Recipients must be in good academic standing, exhibit exemplary character and demonstrate potential for success in the field of nursing. They also must have a grade point average of 2.5.
“It is very rewarding to be able to give back,” explains Gerald Cox. “Establishing this scholarship is our way of giving back.”
