Policy 6.4: Communicable Diseases

This Communicable Disease policy is created to ensure the good health and safety of all students and employees of Haywood Community College. Communicable disease shall be defined as an illness due to an infectious agent or its toxic products which is transmitted through various forms of human contact and can pose as a considerable threat to the well-being of the college community. Communicable disease shall include, but not be limited to:
- Hepatitis A, B, and C
- Rubella
- HIV/AIDS
- Tuberculosis
- Measles
- Sexually Transmitted Diseases
- Meningitis
- Whooping Cough
- Mumps
- Influenza
- Chickenpox
- Conjunctivitis
HCC will not unlawfully discriminate in policy or practice, including admissions and employment policies, against individuals who have, or are considered to be at risk for communicable diseases. The College will be in full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it relates to those students and employees who have communicable diseases.
Persons who know, or have reasonable basis for believing that they are infected are expected to seek expert advice about their health circumstances and are obligated ethically and legally to conduct themselves responsibly in accordance with such knowledge for the protection of others.
Persons who know that they are infected with a communicable disease are urged to share that information with the appropriate college administrator. Students should contact the Vice President of Student Development Services and employees should contact the President, so that the College can respond appropriately to their needs. Medical information relating to the communicable diseases of a student or employee will be disclosed to responsible college officials only on a strictly limited need-to-know basis.
