Policy 6.6: Definitions of Employment Classifications and Applicable Benefits

Haywood Community College full-time employees are approved for employment by the President (see Employment Procedures) and are ratified by the Haywood Community College Board of Trustees. Full-time employees are employed and contracted for a specific length of time. Part-time employees are employed for a specific period of time within a fiscal year on a part-time temporary basis.

Employment Classifications:

  1. Full-time: Employees working on a full time schedule in a permanently established position when the incumbent is expected to be retained in the position on a contracted basis. Full-time staff receive contracts for a specific length of time within a fiscal year. Full-time faculty receive contracts for a nine month period within a fiscal year, as required by state law, and may be contracted on a month by month basis per instructional needs thereafter.

    During specified contract periods, full-time faculty and staff will be afforded the following benefits:

    • Annual Leave (based on years of service)
    • Sick Leave
    • Longevity Pay (based on years of service)
    • Holiday Pay

    Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS). TSERS benefits include retirement, long-term disability, short term disability and life insurance)

    • North Carolina State Health Plan medical insurance
    • Life Insurance

    Full-time faculty and staff are also offered the optional benefits as provided by the College. 

  2. Part-time With Benefits: Employees working 30 – 39 hours per week for at least 9 months per year. Benefits for part-time with benefits appointments are:

    • Annual Leave (based on years of service and hours worked)
    • Sick Leave (based on hours worked)
    • Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS). TSERS benefits include retirement, long-term disability, short term disability and life insurance)
    • North Carolina State Health Plan medical insurance
  3. Part-time: Part-time employment includes those employees with contracts that are less than 30 hours per week. Part-time employees are employed for a specific period of time within a fiscal year on a part-time temporary basis. Part-time employees do not receive benefits.

  4. Probationary: New employees and existing employees who enter a new position as a result of any type of personnel action (promoted, transferred, or demoted) are placed on probation for a designated period of time. Full-time and part-time with benefit employees are issued a probationary contract. The College may also place a contracted employee on a probationary contract of varying lengths during any period when an employee’s performance deems such action. Employees on probationary status receive benefits in accordance to whether they are full-time, part-time with benefits, or part-time. During the probationary period an employee may be terminated at will.

  5. Interim and/or Trainees: The college issues contracts for a specific period of time to employees who serve in a position on an interim basis. It also issues contracts to employees who are given a temporary assignment for purposes of professional growth and development, recognized as trainees. Employees with contracts for an interim or trainee appointment receive benefits in accordance to whether they are full-time, part-time with benefits, or part-time.
