Procedure 3.12.3: In Case of a Fire

In case of fire, personnel are instructed to activate the fire alarm system. After the fire alarm has been activated, go to the nearest telephone and dial "0" and inform the Switchboard Operator/Receptionist of your identity and the location, nature and extent of your fire. The Switchboard Operator/Receptionist will first call the proper authorities and secondly notify the President (In the event the switchboard cannot be reached, dial 911 to report the fire.).

When the alarm is activated, all personnel will evacuate the building through the nearest exit and each instructor will be responsible to see that all of their students are out of the classroom and the building, as well as be responsible to see that all classroom doors and windows are closed and lights turned off. In the event of fire, no doors should be locked. If doors are locked, emergency personnel will have to force entry, causing considerable unnecessary damage to the property. Faculty and staff located in each building will be responsible to see that all students have been evacuated before they exit the building themselves.

In the event of a fire, all personnel will remain out of the buildings until told to return, and will remain at least 100 feet away from any part of the building, particularly the exits and entrances so as not to hamper movement of emergency personnel and equipment. Keep all roads and sidewalks clear. Do not leave campus because of the possibility of hindering emergency vehicles.

Faculty, staff, or students may attempt to extinguish a fire with fire extinguishers if they deem it is safe to do so. The judgement of the individual on the scene must be relied upon to make this determination. A quick response may prevent greater damage to property and possibly prevent loss of life.
