Procedure 3.30.1: Tobacco Free Campus Procedure

Enforcing compliance of the tobacco free policy will be a responsibility of the campus community at large. College administrators, faculty and staff will be asked to remind everyone of the tobacco free policy.

Training sessions will be held for all faculty and staff in this regard.

The first month (January 2, 2008-February 2, 2008) will be a non aggressive, awareness raising phase of requesting compliance. Anyone observed using tobacco will receive an invitational reminder of the policy with a thank you for future compliance from faculty, staff, or security officers. Campus security and other offices on campus (HR, student services) have been provided with green pocket cards for this purpose.

For Students

Effective February 5, 2008 a progressive compliance policy will be implemented for students. The first time a student is observed using tobacco they will be given a verbal warning of violation of the tobacco free policy. The second time a campus security officer or administrator observes the same individual using tobacco they will be issued a citation by campus security.Repeat violations will result in a referral to the Vice President of Student Services for a disciplinary conference.

For Employees

Employees who fail to comply with the policy when the penalty phase of enforcement is implemented in January 2008 would be handled through the regular supervisory discipline process.

For Visitors

Visitors to campus who fail to comply would be given invitational reminders of the college policy with a request that they comply in the future.

Emphasis should be given towards positive methods of ensuring compliance.
