Procedure 4.6.2: Wood Products Pricing Procedures

Amended Date: Tue, May 13, 2008

Wood Products courses are designed to train personnel for various jobs in the lumber industry.  For the most part, materials for the courses will be purchased by the college.  In some cases, custom orders may be accepted, but only customer orders that are to the benefit of HCC or which are thought to be necessary for student training will be accepted.

Prices for certain services such as sawing, saw filing, lumber drying, and dressing will be determined by the program coordinator and approved by the Board of Trustees.  Prices are subject to change without notice.

The following restrictions will be placed on custom orders which are accepted by the college:

  1. LOGS IN WHICH METAL HAS BEEN FOUND OR IS LIKELY TO BE FOUND CANNOT BE SAWN DUE TO THE POTENTIAL DAMAGE AND PERSONAL SAFETY OF MILL PERSONNEL.  DAMAGE TO THE SAWS AND MILL EQUIPMENT AS A RESULT OF METAL EMBEDDED IN CUSTOM LOGS IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OWNER OF THE LOGS.
  2. CHARGES TO CUSTOMERS FOR DAMAGE TO CIRCLE SAWS BEYOND BITS OR SHANKS SUCH AS SHOULDER DAMAGE, WILL BE VALUED BY THE WOOD PRODUCTS COORDINATOR BASED ON CURRENT SAW VALUE AND REPAIR COST.
  3. GREEN OR PARTLY-DRY LUMBER MUST BE AIR-DRIED TO BELOW 20% MC PRIOR TO KILN DRYING.  DRYING OF ANY WOOD OVER 6/4” IS AT OWNERS RISK DUE TO THE POSSIBLE DRYING DEGRADE.  (EXAMPLE:  HONEYCOMB, ETC.)
  4. LUMBER IN WHICH METAL HAS BEEN FOUND OR IS LIKELY TO BE FOUND CANNOT BE DRESSED DUE TO POTENTIAL EQUIPMENT DAMAGE AND PERSONAL SAFETY OF MILL PERSONNEL.  DAMAGE TO RIP SAWS, PLANER KNIVES, AND RELATED EQUIPMENT AS A RESULT OF METAL EMBEDDED IN LUMBER IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OWNER OF THE LUMBER.
  5. 90 DAYS AFTER TELEPHONE NOTIFICATION, UNCLAIMED LUMBER WILL BE SOLD WITHOUTH FURTHER NOTIFICATION UNLESS ARRANGEMENTS ARE MADE WITH THE WOOD PRODUCTS COORDINATOR.

In some cases, HCC may sell lumber which the college owns.  In such cases, the college will use the Hardwood Market Report as a base for pricing institutional hardwood lumber for sale.  This publication is issued every Saturday at Memphis, Tennessee, and sets the basis for pricing hardwood lumber in the Appalachian area.

HCC lumber may be sold to lumber or furniture companies by negotiating the highest price possible for graded lumber.  Per standard industry practice, a 2% discount may be given for payments received within 10 days.  Occasionally, poor markets require that lumber be sold under market price due to species and grade involved.

Credit is extended only to wholesale companies.  Cash is the preferred method of payment for all products and services.
