Procedure 6.10.1: Faculty Evaluation Procedure

At Haywood Community College both full-time and part-time faculty performance is evaluated in several different ways:

Full-Time Faculty

  • Three-Week Evaluations - Three-week evaluations by students are administered each semester for at least two classes taught by full-time faculty. One class is chosen by the instructor and one class is chosen by the instructor’s supervisor. Feedback on the evaluations and suggestions for improvement are shared with the instructor by the supervisor.
  • End of Semester Evaluations - End of Semester Evaluations by students are administered each semester for a least two classes taught by full-time faculty. One class is chosen by the instructor and one class is chosen by the instructor’s supervisor. Feedback on the evaluations and suggestions for improvement are shared with the instructor by the supervisor.
  • Observation of Instruction – Each full-time instructor is evaluated by his or her supervisor at least once each academic year using the Observation of Instruction form. The class to be observed is mutually agreed upon by the faculty member and the supervisor. Results of the observation are shared with the faculty member by the supervisor and plans for improvement are discussed.
  • Development Plan – The supervisor of each faculty member completes a Development Plan form for the instructor each year, usually at the end of Spring Semester. Results of the student evaluations and classroom observation are incorporated into this evaluation. Other areas evaluated are reliability, cooperation, work effort, responsibility, punctuality and attendance, and job interest. Analysis of and suggestions for improvement are discussed as well as plans for professional development.

Part-Time Faculty

  • Three-Week Evaluations - Three-week evaluations by students are administered each semester for all classes taught by part-time faculty.    Feedback on the evaluations and suggestions for improvement are shared with the instructor by the supervisor.
  • End of Semester Evaluations - End of Semester evaluations by students are administered each semester for all classes taught by part-time faculty.    Feedback on the evaluations and suggestions for improvement are shared with the instructor by the supervisor.
  • Observation of Instruction – Each part-time instructor is evaluated by his or her supervisor or by a peer evaluator at least once each academic year using the Observation of Instruction Form. The class to be observed is mutually agreed upon by the faculty member and the supervisor. Results of the observation are shared with the faculty member by the supervisor and plans for improvement are discussed.
