Unique Programs

HCC's department of natural resources offers several programs unique in our state. The Fish and Wildlife Management associate degree, accredited by the North American Wildlife Technology Association, is currently the only one offered statewide. Also, the Forest Management Technology associate degree program is the only one accredited by the Society of American Foresters. The college also offers the only Low Impact Development associate degree in our state.

HCC natural resources students compete at the national level and consistently outperform peers at other colleges and universities.

Other unique programs of study offered at HCC are the Professional Crafts programs. These programs--the four major program areas are clay, fiber, jewelry, and wood--are the only ones in the nation that provide both hands-on craft curriculum and the business training to aid students in successfully starting their own business.

Distance Learning

HCC distance learning students represent over half the counties in North Carolina, as well as several other states. In the 2010-11 year, roughly 60.8% of our students enrolled in at least one online or hybrid course; hybrid or online course sections represented roughly 30.0% of our total course offerings with over 49.1% of our courses having an online presence; and 9 associates degrees, 3 diplomas, and 9 certificates were offered completely online. Through distance courses, HCC is able to reach students who might otherwise be unable to attend the college.
