Haywood Community College Early Childhood Associate-Teacher Associate student Shelia Wilke will graduate in May and would like to assist in Haywood County Schools in grades kindergarten through second or work in a preschool environment.
Shelia has extensive experience with children. She has four at home ranging in age from 11 through 17. She has been a substitute teacher for Haywood County for eight years. Currently, Shelia works with West Asheville Baptist Church’s daycare where she has held different activities for the children such as making identification cards, seat belt safety, first aid, and cooking Indian fry bread.
How does a mother of four fit college into the busy schedule? Shelia says that is one of the biggest reasons she chose HCC. The campus is close to home and close to her children’s schools. Another draw is the number of online classes available to her. She can work on these classes from home and at a time when it’s convenient for her.
Shelia volunteers with Haywood County Public Schools, youth league basketball, Morning Star Church meal assistance, and the Canton soup kitchen. She has also tutored 5th grade at Meadowbrook elementary and volunteered as a field trip supervisor.
“I enjoy watching children learn,” Shelia says. “They have a different point of view than adults. I learn from them.”
Shelia enjoys reading murder mysteries, gardening, fishing, hiking, camping, and spending time with family.
Shelia was the recipient this year of a $1,000 scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. The Foundation awards a total of 400 scholarships annually to students who have demonstrated academic success and community service and who often balance responsibilities of school, work, and family.More Student Stories
