FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
COMMUNITY COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID DEADLINE APPROACHING
Haywood Community College students and other community college students hoping to receive financial assistance this semester must file an application for federal aid (FAFSA) no later than September 15, 1999.
This is the second round in the new financial aid program funded by the North Carolina General Assembly during the last legislative session. Lawmakers appropriated $5 million to create a new North Carolina Community College Grant and Loan program for North Carolina residents enrolled in Curriculum programs. This new financial aid was designed in part to offset the tuition increase of approximately $95 per semester for full-time, in-state students.
This new financial aid program replaces the North Carolina Community College Scholarship program, which was financed with interest from a reserve fund. It is expected this larger pool will provide financial assistance to ten times the number helped under the old scholarship plan.
Since this is a new program, extra steps were taken to ensure every eligible student is aware of the aid and has the opportunity to file for assistance. Hence, there are two application periods each semester.
Filing by the September 15 deadline makes qualified students eligible for funding in the second payment cycle this fall semester. The spring application deadline is November 30, 1999 for the first payment and January 31, 2000 for the second payment. All payments are need-based and students must meet certain enrollment requirements and be in an eligible Curriculum program.
