Haywood Community College’s SIFE Group Participates in "Make A Difference Day"

Members of Haywood Community College Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) will participate in the "Make a Difference Day" project sponsored by USA Weekend. SIFE members will collect teddy bears for the North Carolina Highway Patrol’s "Teddy Bear Program." Highway Patrol Officers will often use a teddy bear as a distraction to calm a small child involved in an accident. Members of Phi Theta Kappa (the honor society at the two-year college level) and members of the Student Government Association will join HCC’s SIFE Team in this endeavor.

SIFE members will have a kick-off party on Thursday, October 7 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Student Lounge located in Building 200. Visitors are asked to stop in for refreshments, talk with SIFE members and bring a new, childproof teddy bear for the drive. A local highway patrol officer will be on hand to discuss the "Teddy Bear Program."

On "Make a Difference Day," Saturday, October 23, HCC’s SIFE members will be collecting teddy bears at the local Wal-Mart store throughout the day. Wal-Mart has agreed to set up a special teddy bear display to encourage its shoppers to participate in the "Make a Difference Day" project.

This is the second year that Haywood Community College Students in Free Enterprise has participated in the "Make a Difference Day" project. This is also the second year of the organization on the Haywood Community College campus. Last year HCC’s SIFE group was named "Rookie of the Year" and "First Runner-up." The purpose of SIFE is to teach others about the American Free Enterprise system while learning about entrepreneurship. This project focuses on the social responsibilities that organizations have for the communities in which they operate.
