DUDEK APPOINTED TO WATERSHED ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. recently appointed Dave Dudek, Fish and Wildlife Management instructor, to serve on the Pigeon River Joint Watershed Advisory Committee. This committee was formed as part of the settlement agreement regarding the 1996 Water Color Variance and the 1996 NPDES Permit issued to Champion International Corporation. Dave says the real challenge in serving on this committee will be to keep a balance between the economic realities and the water quality issues. Dave said," No water flows into Haywood County. All of the county’s water originates here. We should take our water conservation efforts very seriously. After all, water is life."
As an HCC instructor for the past fourteen years, Dave has incorporated his concern over water quality into teaching opportunities for his classes. He tries to get students involved in community events that promote water conservation. Annually, HCC students take part in the "Fall Big Sweep", "Richland Clean Stream Day", "Environmental Educational Day" and the "Kids in the Creek Program." During the "Kids in the Creek Program", students work in rotational teaching stations focused toward middle school children. HCC students demonstrate electro-shocking, kick netting and chemical testing—always with the focus on water quality. Dudek’s students also are members of CATCH (Caring for Aquatic through Conservation Habits).
Dudek is active in several community clubs and organizations that focus on water conservation issues. He is Vice President of Haywood Waterways Association, Chairman of the Richland Creek Action Committee and County Coordinator of "Big Sweep". He is also County Coordinator of the Volunteer Water Information Network (VWIN) a group that samples water in streams across the county once a month for chemical testing.
